The Santo António Caves are part of the Serras d'Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park and are linked to the Alvados Caves. These geological formations started 180 thousand years ago and it is estimated that the Santo António Caves existed 50 thousand years ago - they will have grown at the rate of one centimeter per century!
The Santo António Caves were occasionally discovered on June 2, 1955 by two men who worked near Pedra do Altar.
The story goes that, looking for a bird they were trying to catch, the men entered through a large crack in a rock, where he had taken refuge.
Thus was discovered the last tourist cave in the municipality, which occupies an area of approximately 6 000 m2. Its largest room measures 80m x 50m and the maximum height is 43 meters.
With a natural chimney that allows to ventilate the cave, the temperature remains almost constant, oscillating between 16º and 18º.
After its opening to the public, like other caves, there was an investment in terms of access and lighting, which sought to highlight the beauty of the rooms, the stalagmites and stalactites that compose them.
Currently, the Santo António Caves are served by a set of support buildings, and the visit begins with the artificial tunnel that goes down to a first room, where you can admire the great natural lake, which works as an antechamber to a narrow a passage that later opens in a monumental and unique room, whose size and beauty make it unusual, continuing to be considered by specialists and the general public as one of the most beautiful and richest in Europe.
