The Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Museum of Art (better known by the acronym MASP) is one of the most important Brazilian cultural institutions. Since November 7, 1968, it is located on Avenida Paulista, São Paulo city, in a building designed by Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi to be its headquarters. Famous for the free span of more than 70 meters that extends under four huge pillars, designed by engineer José Carlos de Figueiredo Ferraz, the building is considered an important example of Brazilian brutalist architecture and one of the most popular icons of the state capital. by the three spheres of executive power.
Private non-profit institution, the museum was founded in 1947 at the initiative of Paraibano Assis Chateaubriand. Throughout its history, it has been noted for a number of important initiatives in the field of museology and artistic education, as well as for its strong didactic performance. It was also one of the first museums on the continent to act as a cultural center, as well as the first museum in the country to accommodate the artistic trends that emerged after the Second World War.
MASP has the most important and comprehensive collection of European art in Latin America and throughout the Southern Hemisphere, where the consistent sets of Italian and French schools stand out. It also has an extensive section of Brazilian art and small sets of African and Asian art, decorative arts, archaeological pieces, etc., totaling approximately 8,000 pieces. The collection is listed by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). The museum also houses one of the largest art libraries in the country.
On the cultural level, however, São Paulo was still a long way from the then federal capital, where the aesthetic debate was much more advanced and the government already assimilated the modern international manifestations (with the building of the Ministry of Education and Culture being the greatest example). in such a context). His most notable reference continued to be the 1922 Modern Art Week. While this event had allowed some opening to modern artists in the official halls, it influenced the creation of groups and associations such as the Pro-Modern Society and the Artistic Family. Paulista and guaranteed some substance to the aesthetic debate, on the other, its purposes did not reach the general public or define a local artistic circuit. The city had a prestigious opera house and a large number of theaters, with a wide range of programs, but there was only one art-oriented museum, the State Picture Gallery, devoted almost exclusively to academic art. The School of Fine Arts followed the same orientation and there were few commercial galleries open to modern trends.
The museum was inaugurated on October 2, 1947, with the presence of the state governor, Ademar de Barros and the minister of education, Clemente Mariani, as well as other personalities from the artistic and political world. The next day, the first visitors came to see the fledgling collection, still with few pieces, notably Pablo Picasso's Athlete's Bust and Rembrandt's Rising Beard Self-Portrait. Two temporary exhibitions could also be seen: one with Candido Portinari's Bible Series and one with works by Ernesto de Fiori.
