Prague, a Baroque city, is famous for its huge palaces in Malá Strana and in the Old Town, the Church of St. Nicolas and the beautiful sculptures that adorn the Charles Bridge monumentally.
Less well known is the collection of sculptures and baroque paintings of the city of Prague. Of a well-preserved richness, the collection is composed of numerous masterpieces. The collection, owned by the National Gallery, has been available since March 2008 in the beautiful Schwarzenberg Palace. Completely rebuilt, the immense Renaissance palace on Hradčanská Square (Prague Castle Square) is distinguished from the other palaces by its "diamond-tipped" graffiti that adorn the façade. The ample rooms of the museum are invaded by the sunlight reflecting the carved wooden ceilings or the beautiful frescoed frescoes, not forgetting the windows that unveil unique panoramic views of the Petřín Park, the golden ceilings of Malá Strana and the Square of the Castle.
This is a must stop during a trip to Prague if you want to admire the masterpieces - paintings and sculptures - of one of the most beautiful times of artistic creation in Bohemia.
We suggest starting the second floor, where the works of Hans van Aachen, Bartholomeus Spranger and the sculptor Adrián de Vries, recall the golden age of the court of Emperor Rudolf II during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The first floor is dedicated to the most famous baroque painters of Bohemia, almost always unknown to the public: from the first generation, begun by Karel Škréta, to the sober and solemn realism of Michael Leopold Willmann, to the dramatic and emotionally charged style of Petr Brandl, whose sculptural faces of old people thrill at their marked expressions. The works of the portrait genius Jan Kupecký and Václav Vavřinec Reiner also illustrate the Baroque period. In relation to sculpture, the ground floor exhibits works by two radically opposite personalities: Mathias Bernhard Braun and Fernando Maximiliano Brokoff. The twisting of bodies and the mythical exaltation present in the work of the first contrasts with the sobriety, the realism of the second.
Open every day, except Monday, from 10am to 6pm.
