This town was founded by Antonio José Rincón, in 1811, when one of his trips to Ocaña in the interior of the country, stopped. There the richness and beauty of the landscape dazzled him. This territory was virgin until the construction of the main road to the coast, at the end of the 1940s.

Due to the development of this communication route, the first human settlements took place, forming the La Esperanza and La Pedregoza nuclei in approximately 1950.

The American construction company Morrison installed the staff housing camps, the material and equipment warehouses on the site where the municipal seat is currently located. The firm built the physical infrastructure of the aqueduct system and primary sanitation services. When he left, he left the buildings that gave rise to the hamlet called La Esperanza.

The fertility of their lands attracted Santander, coastal, Boyacenses and each one dedicated himself to working their land.
