Templar castle, on the right bank of the river Nabão, integrated, at the time of the Reconquest, the so-called Tagus Line, along with others in the region, which accompany the style: the castles of Almourol, Idanha, Monsanto, Pombal and Zêzere.
The town of Tomar was elevated to the category of city by alvará of D. Maria II (1826-1828 and 1834-1853), 13 of February of 1844.
The castle features elements of military architecture in the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles.
The castle is classified as a National Monument by Decree published on June 23, 1918, and as a World Heritage Site, by the General Assembly of UNESCO from June 27 to 30, 1983.
