It is the work of King Afonso V, who, in fulfillment of a vow he had made to Saint Anthony to assist him in the conquests of North Africa, ordered him to stand up. It was the king himself, with great accompaniment of clergy, nobility and people, who laid the first stone in February 1470.
It was classified as a National Monument on June 23, 1910.
